In short
- No accounts and no ads. We don't sell or hand over any data.
- Google Analytics runs only if you allow it in the cookie banner. Until then it is not loaded at all.
- Our own counters (page views, votes, search) use no cookies and don't store your IP address.
Cookies and browser storage
| Name | What for | Kept |
|---|---|---|
lang (cookie) | The language you picked, so a link without a language opens your version of the page. | 1 year |
| Browser storage (localStorage) | Your settings on this site: theme, region, open tabs, tracker progress, your cookie choice, a copy of the latest Pet Tracker release. It stays in your browser. | Until you clear it; the cookie choice is asked again after 180 days |
_ga, _ga_* (Google cookies) | Google Analytics: visits and how the pages are used. Only after you allow analytics. | Up to 2 years |
What our server records
- Page views and votes: views and visitors per page per day, the “was this helpful” votes and anonymous guide statistics (which mode and step you read; in the roster tracker your classes and number of characters). To count a visitor once a day the server keeps a hash of your IP address and browser made with a secret key — the IP address itself is not stored.
- Site search: the query, the language, how many results it found and whether you opened one — with no visitor id.
- Feedback: your text, the page and, if you give one, your contact; it may also record your country (two letters).
- Screenshots: on the Pet Tracker page you can attach a PNG or JPG to your feedback. The server saves it again from the pixels only (the file's metadata, such as the location in a phone photo, is dropped); only the site owner can open it, and it is deleted with the message, at the latest 60 days after the message was dealt with.
- Web server logs: IP address, browser and the requested page, for security and error checks. They are deleted after 10 days.
Other services
- Google Analytics: only with your consent, see above.
- GitHub: the Pet Tracker page asks GitHub for the latest release, and the download comes from GitHub.
- Links to YouTube, Twitch and other sites open those sites; their own privacy rules apply there.
Your choice
- Change your cookie choice any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page. “Necessary only” also removes the Google Analytics cookies from this site.
- Want your feedback deleted, or have a question? Write through the feedback form at the bottom of any page and leave a contact if you want a reply.
